I never really had the chance to leave Tokyo. I was a broke teenager. I felt lucky when a friend showed up at my girlfriend's apartment with something as rare as a car and offered to drive us for a day out in Kanagawa.

I was told we were going to the beach, but I was in for more than that. The island beside us looked unreachable, or off-limits at least. From a distance it was just a lighthouse and a few low buildings, something industrial. When our friend suggested we go there, I didn't understand why. I didn't say that though, I just followed.

Enoshima took the whole day. We wandered, climbed, and kept going without checking the time. By the time we reached the far end of the island it was night, and we still had the entire thing to cross back over. The lighthouse had turned on. I could see the beam cutting through the clouds above us. She was too tired to walk anymore, so I carried her back to the car.
